The Mobile Internet: the next big thing in media
The Mobile Internet pertains to the access to the World Wide Web using a mobile device like mobile phones, personal digital assistant or PDAs, and other portable gadgets connected to a public network minus the need for a desktop computer or a fixed landline connection.
It was first deemed that the internet shall be the only digital platform having billions and billions of users since its introduction in the early 1990s. However, times are fast changing. According to Tomi Ahonen, New Media Consultant, in 2007, approximately 67% of the 1.3 billion internet subscribers use the mobile phone to access the internet while only 37% use their Personal Computers to do so. The Mobile Internet is fast conquering internet technology.
But what brought about this revolutionary change in internet technology? The emergence of smartphones contributes to this change with the durability of handsets over PCs as one of the obvious factors. Ahonen noted that PCs are replaced every 3.5 years while handsets are replaced every 18 months. Cellphones are also relatively cheaper than most laptops and PCs and the former, being able to fit in anyone’s pocket, is sufficient for travels. For sure, the Mobile Internet’s popularity will grow fast over the next decade.
The Mobile Internet is destined to evolve to a more effective media than Internet because the money is there. Cell phones are equipped with micropayment billing, making internet banking and payment easier with its innovation.
Eric Schmidt, CEO of Google once quoted “Mobile Phones are cheaper than PCs, there are three times more of them, growing at twice the speed, and they increasingly have internet access. Mobile is going to be the next internet phenomenon.” With this said, Mobile Internet is definitely the next great medium of the 21st century.
